Skykomish River Salmon Fishing Closure Set for November 2026
Salmon fishing will be prohibited on a section of Washington’s Skykomish River throughout November as fisheries managers work to protect vulnerable coho salmon populations in the Snohomish River system.
The closure takes effect November 1 and remains in place through November 30, 2026. It applies to the Skykomish River from its mouth upstream to the railroad bridge at Big Eddy. The restriction covers all salmon fishing in this area.
According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), coho returns in the freshwater and terminal fishing areas of the Snohomish River system have fallen short of expectations, despite stronger-than-anticipated catches in nearby marine fisheries. Low river levels may be affecting salmon migration, and recent rainfall has not significantly improved the overall situation.
The decision follows earlier restrictions on the Snohomish River intended to reduce pressure on the 2026 coho return. Managers are concerned because coho stocks in the Snohomish River system, including the Skykomish, were classified as overfished in 2018. Although the stocks were declared rebuilt in 2024, the 2025 coho return fell below its escapement goal. Another consecutive year of poor returns could jeopardize progress made through recovery efforts.
Fishery managers will continue monitoring salmon numbers and river conditions. Fishing restrictions may be reconsidered if the situation improves.
The closure applies specifically to salmon fishing. Other game fish fisheries on the Skykomish River are scheduled to open November 1 under Washington’s sport fishing regulations.
Anglers should review current rules and emergency updates before heading out. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends subscribing to fishing regulation alerts and using the Fish Washington mobile app to stay informed about changes.
