Seattle Fire officials are reminding residents, particularly those living in multifamily housing, to follow safe charging practices for devices powered by lithium-ion batteries.
Last month, Seattle Fire responded to a residential fire that was likely caused by an overheated lithium-ion battery-powered device. The device was being charged when it caught fire and burned the sofa beneath it, highlighting the potential dangers of leaving electronics charging on upholstered furniture.
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used in smartphones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and other electronic devices. When damaged, overheated, or charged improperly, these batteries can pose a serious fire risk.
Seattle Fire recommends the following precautions:
Charge on a safe surface: Place devices on a hard, flat surface, such as a table, desk, or bare floor. Avoid charging them on sofas, beds, or other upholstered furniture.
Watch for warning signs: Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, develops an unusual smell, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.
Unplug when fully charged: Disconnect devices once charging is complete.
Use approved chargers: Use the original charging cord and adapter or equipment approved by the device's manufacturer.
Residents should take unusual battery behavior seriously. If a device begins smoking or catches fire, move away, alert others, and call 911. Do not risk handling a burning or smoking battery.
Following these precautions can help reduce the risk of residential fires and protect people living in apartments and other multifamily buildings.
