The City of Seattle is looking for a transportation planner to join the Seattle Design Commission, a 10-member advisory body that helps shape the design of public projects and spaces throughout the city.
Mayor Katie Wilson is recruiting a professional for an initial two-year term beginning in March 2027. The selected commissioner will also be eligible for a second two-year term.
The commission reviews and provides recommendations on the design of city-funded capital projects, including parks, community centers, fire stations, Sound Transit light rail investments, and projects involving the long-term or permanent use of streets and alleys.
Candidates should have a background in transportation planning. Experience with publicly funded development, transportation policy, or planning is preferred.
Time commitment and responsibilities:
Approximately 10 hours per month.
Commission meetings take place during the day on the first and third Thursdays of each month.
Commissioners collaborate with project managers and design teams and provide recommendations to improve the design of public projects.
During their term, commissioners may not contract with the City on capital projects reviewed by the commission.
How to apply:
Interested candidates must submit a resume and a letter of interest by November 23, 2026.
Applications should be emailed to SDC_Administration@seattle.gov, addressed to Mayor Katie Wilson, care of Michael Jenkins, Executive Director of the Seattle Design Commission.
The commission was established in 1968 and advises the Mayor, City Council, and city departments on projects and policies that shape Seattle's public spaces and built environment.
