Washington and Denmark Build New Partnership for Sustainable Industry and Maritime Innovation
Washington State and Denmark are strengthening their economic relationship through a new cooperation agreement designed to encourage clean technology, maritime innovation, and sustainable industrial development.
Governor Bob Ferguson and Karen Eva Abrahamsen, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Denmark in the United States, signed the agreement during One Ocean Week in Seattle, an international ocean-focused conference hosted by Washington Maritime Blue. The partnership establishes a framework for collaboration between Washington and Denmark across several strategic sectors.
Key priorities include reducing industrial emissions, improving water efficiency and reuse, expanding sustainable fuel technologies, modernizing ports, and promoting cleaner maritime operations. The agreement also encourages technology sharing, business partnerships, research collaboration, and trade and study missions.
Both regions bring valuable experience to the partnership. Denmark has developed expertise in vessel electrification and environmentally friendly shipping initiatives, while Washington is advancing electrification across its existing and next-generation ferry systems. Their combined knowledge could support further progress in reducing emissions from maritime transportation.
Another major area of cooperation is industrial symbiosis, a process in which businesses reuse resources such as waste heat, water, and leftover materials from other industrial operations. These practices can reduce operating costs, improve resource efficiency, and create new opportunities for sustainable economic development.
Washington has established itself as a leader in this field, with more than 25 ports, cities, and counties pursuing industrial symbiosis initiatives with support from the Washington State Department of Commerce. Danish partners have already contributed to economic development projects across the state.
The new agreement aims to build on these existing connections, creating additional opportunities for businesses, research institutions, ports, and local communities in both regions. By combining expertise in maritime engineering and sustainable manufacturing, Washington and Denmark hope to advance practical solutions that support economic growth while addressing environmental challenges.
